Denis Moris Biography
Mansch, Normandy-Paris, French-preservist, part of the Nabi group, the author of easel and monumental work on mythological and religious Christian topics, Denis's detailed biography was born in the port city on the coast of the La-Channel, where his father, serving the railway company, was sent during the Franco-Prussian war. After the war, the family settled in Saint-Germain-en-l near Paris.
He tried to write poetry, took the lessons of the drawing and copied the paintings of the old masters in the Louvre. From childhood, Denis was distinguished by deep religiosity, he was attracted by the art of Fra Angelico and other masters of the early Italian Renaissance. A great influence on the formation of Denis was acquainted with the painting of Puvi de Shavannah.
At the end of the Lyceum in the year, Denis, along with Wuyar and Roussel, entered the school of elegant arts. At the same time, he visited the Academy of Julian and actively supported the idea of his comrade Paul Seryuzier about his own art association. Thanks to the mediation of Seryuzier, who wrote a small landscape, the so-called “Talisman”, the Museum of ORSE, Paris, Nabi, who wrote under the leadership of Gauguin’s field, met the experience of Pont Avena and the basics of symbolism.
The exhibition of “groups of impressionists and syntheticists” with Gauguen's participation, arranged next year, strengthened Nabi in the understanding of painting as the deployment of the logic of the symbolic meaning of images and their decorative design. Denis took off the workshop in Montmartre, which he shared with Bonnar and Wuyar. In the year, he first presented his work in the cabin, a year later-in the independent salon, then at the 9th exhibition of the Twenty group in Brussels.
During this decade, Denis was not only exhibited, but also actively acted as a theoretician of art and criticism. In the year in the journal Art et Critique, he published his first article about modern painting. Friends called Denis “Nabi beautiful icons”: turning to a religious and symbolic theme, he used planar, generalized forms, sometimes likening his paintings - with their muffled, rather bright tones - Italian frescoes of the 15th century.
Having got acquainted with Andre, he performed a series of lithographs for his book “Journey of Urians” at the same time Denis began work on lithographs for the vocal poem Claude Debyussie “Virgin-chosen”. In the year, Ambruaz Vollard ordered him a series of lithographs on the topic “Love”, later, also on the initiative of Marshan, Denis will perform xylographs “The imitation of Jesus Christ” in the fall of the year, the artist went to Italy for the first time, together with Seryuzie, they traveled to Umbriya and Tuscany on bicycles.
The painting “Spring with figures of the Holy Grove written in the year” - an allegorical, saturated with associations - became not only an important stage in the evolution of the artist, but also a significant phenomenon of symbolism. In the year, Denis fulfilled his first order in the field of religious art - the decorative decoration of the chapel of the Holy Cross in the vezin, and in the year created stained -glass windows for the same church of St.
Margarita.
